Effacing Power

Effacing Power was a solo exhibition at Steve Turner Contemporary in 2013. Wyman utilized painting, photography, collage and fabric sculpture to transform images from Occupy Steubenville, Free Pussy Riot, Black Bloc in Egypt and other protest movements. Her highly patterned works incorporate domestic craft techniques (such as quilting and faux finish painting) to investigate the clothing and masks worn by protesters including paisley bandannas, keffiyehs and camouflage, all of which are ubiquitous in current protest and resistance movements. Wyman explores the idea that the clothed body is often the first point of protest and demonstrates how masks and disguises provide collective power and protection in conflict zones.
